Remus couldn't stop staring at the photograph. It was just a quick snap taken over the summer, when the four of them had managed to get together. Most of the pictures had at least three of them, but this one was just of Peter, who was looking to one side of the camera with a shy, sweet smile, sunlight turning his blond hair into a soft halo.

Remus couldn't explain why he'd snatched the picture out of the pile when James had dropped them on his bed. No one seemed to have missed it, so he kept it hidden away between the pages of his Ancient Runes book, which none of the other three had ever touched.

Remus couldn't tell where Peter was looking. No one else was in the picture, and there was no hint of who had taken it. Remus just knew that he hadn't. He wondered if the smile was for James or Sirius. Or, he took a deep breath at the thought, for Remus. For himself.

Remus couldn't say anything to Peter about it, even thought he really wanted to. He didn't want to find out for good that the look wasn't for him.

Peter couldn't stop watching Remus. It was becoming a problem of sorts, especially since Lily had already noticed. He didn't think she'd say anything, but she kept giving him sympathetic looks. He cringed every time she did, waiting for someone to notice and laugh, but he couldn't keep his eyes away from Remus, fringe falling into his eyes as he leaned over his book, long fingers playing with his quill.

Peter couldn't explain why he'd stopped following James and Sirius around, and started following Remus. One definite upside was that he seemed to be doing better with his school work, and he thought he might actually have a chance of doing well on his NEWTs. Some of them, at least. And Remus was always happy to explain something that Peter didn't understand, even if he'd explained it five times already. Peter had understood it perfectly the first time. He just wanted to hear Remus' soft, knowledgeable voice tell him once more.

Peter couldn't tell whether Remus was in Gryffindor Tower or not. Most of his books were gone, but the Ancient Runes text that Remus always kept with him was lying on the bed. After glancing around, Peter sat on Remus' bed and picked up the book, which quickly fell open to a page marked by a photograph. It was a picture of Peter. As he picked it up, the door opened, and Remus walked inside.

Peter couldn't say anything, so he just smiled, a shy, sweet smile. Looking hopeful, Remus smiled back.

Eeeee! I meant to comment earlier, but I didn't think I could do so coherently from work!

This was such a nice distraction this morning, thank you! I love all the little details in this. I can just picture the light in the picture, haloing Peter's head. I love hearing both sides, each of their little stories and longing, how Remus always kept that book with him! And I love how you've managed to covey so much without dialog - that's always such a crutch on mine!

I especially love that Remus is thinking the whole time that he'd like Peter's smile in the picture to have been for him, and then at the end he gets that same shy smile from Peter in person. *squee*

This is SO SWEET! I just love it. Thanks!

	YOU ARE MADE OF WIN!!!! I love the way they watch each other, the way Lily notices, the way Remus carries that picture around. And I love how Peter keeps asking Remus to explain, even when he gets it right away, just to hear Remus speak. And then the fact that Remus gets that same smile at the end! So much love.
